With two weeks left in Europe's Ryder Cup race, Nick Dougherty now knows it could all come down to what sort of hotel bed he gets in Holland and Scotland.
The 26-year-old has put himself back into contention by finishing joint second to Swede Peter Hanson at the SAS Masters in Stockholm - but only after going through the pain barrier.
Dougherty woke up before the final round with back trouble and was glad for once his chiropractor was not out on tour with him.
"If there was a chance of me doing some long-term damage he would have told me to pull the plug and quit," said the Liverpudlian, returning to form after the understandable slump that followed his mother's death in April.
"But after all I've been through I was going to finish no matter what.
"I don't know if the bed was too soft, but every time I bent over I felt it.
"I went to the gym to try to warm up, but it got worse. The pain was no big deal, but I knew that if it went into spasm it was all over and I'd just have to pick my ball up and go in."
Two behind Hanson overnight, Dougherty fought back to claim a Ј104,000 cheque and he stands 14th in the cup race - just over Ј120,000 behind Dane Soren Hansen in the 10th and last automatic qualifying spot.
If that still sounds a sizeable amount, the gap between Oliver Wilson in ninth and Martin Kaymer in 11th certainly is not and a thrilling climax is in prospect.
Wilson is little more than Ј2,000 ahead of Hansen, who in turn is a miniscule Ј215 ahead of Kaymer, who finished 14th in Sweden while they were both resting.
"It sounds weird, but I don't feel the pressure," said the 23-year-old German. "I just see it as a challenge and it's fun to be in this position trying to make others angry.
"It's getting really tight, but I'm enjoying it."
Captain Nick Faldo can now count on seven members of his side - double major winner Padraig Harrington, Lee Westwood, Sergio Garcia, Henrik Stenson, Robert Karlsson, Miguel Angel Jimenez and the uncapped Graeme McDowell.
Justin Rose, Wilson and Hansen could all still be knocked out of the top 10, though, and that is why Rose has this week's KLM Open on the Dutch coast on his schedule rather than the first leg of the US Tour's FedEx Cup play-off series, the winner of which receives a Ј5million jackpot.
