Paul Goydos came so close pulling off a fairytale victory at the Players Championship, only to discover the fine line between victory and defeat.
At the par-three 17th, famous for its island green, he was leaning towards hitting a nine-iron when he played the hole in regulation at the Sawgrass TPC on Sunday.
However, his caddie talked him into hitting a wedge, and he found the heart of the green in the raging wind and two-putted for par.
Therefore, when he returned to the same hole in his play-off with Sergio Garcia, it was only common sense that Goydos would hit the same club again.
This time, however, Goydos hit the ball a little higher, where it was more at the mercy of the elements, catching a gust of wind that knocked the ball down into the water.
And just like that, Goydos handed the tournament to Spaniard, who moments later hit a magnificent shot to four feet to secure victory.
"I thought I hit it good, but I think it flighted higher," said Goydos. "The other one penetrated a little better through the wind. This one floated on me and the ball ended up sinking."
Caddie Scott Saginac added: "He hit a great shot. It was crisp, right out of the middle of the club and while it was in the air I thought it was perfect.
"Paul thought it was good, Sergio thought it was good, we all thought it was good. And then it dropped in the water.
"Five seconds earlier or five seconds later it could have ended up two feet from the pin."
