Lucas Glover carded a second successive 66 to claim a one-shot lead after the second round of the Verizon Heritage tournament in Hilton Head, South Carolina.
Defending champion Boo Weekley is a shot behind on nine under after a 64 but England's Nick Dougherty had to settle for a share of 14th despite holding the lead for a while.
Seven under par and without a bogey in his first 32 holes, Dougherty crashed to a quadruple-bogey eight on the 419-yard sixth.
A wild drive forced him to play another ball off the tee and after pushing that into the right-hand rough he needed three more shots to make the green.
To his great credit, though, the 25-year-old from Liverpool hit back straight away with two birdies and by adding a 70 to his opening 67 was still five under par for the tournament.
Londoner Brian Davis also had a share of the lead when he birdied the sixth hole but then came three bogeys in four holes around the turn and then another at the last for a 74 and one under aggregate. He was down in 44th place.
Justin Rose withdrew following his opening 76 because of back trouble.
Rose, who jointly led the Masters after the first round last week before falling back to 36th place, was forced into two lay-offs around this time last year because of back pains and took a long winter break to work on his fitness.
He is due to be back in action at the Wachovia Championship in two weeks' time.
