TORRANCE SET TO EXTEND RECORD

TORRANCE SET TO EXTEND RECORD

Sam Torrance is to take his record number of starts on the European Tour to 705 after being given a sponsor's invite to next week's Portuguese Open.

Last week the 55-year-old former Ryder Cup captain won the Barbados Open on the Seniors Tour by four shots, but the next tournament on that circuit is not until May.

Torrance is the only player in European Tour history to reach 700 tournaments. It is more than 80 more than anybody else and Colin Montgomerie this week became only the 18th to appear in 500 as a professional.
