Mickelson, Westwood paired at HSBC Champions

SHANGHAI (AP) — In his first tournament as the world's No. 1 player, Lee Westwood will be paired at the HSBC Champions with the player who missed out on a dozen chances to top the world rankings.

Westwood will play with Masters champion Phil Mickelson, plus former PGA champion Y.E. Yang, when the World Golf Championship event starts Thursday at Sheshan International.

Defending champion Mickelson played 12 tournaments this year with a chance to replace Tiger Woods at No. 1. Instead, it was Westwood who claimed the top spot this week despite playing once in three months while recovering from injury.

Woods will play with Ernie Els and U.S. Open champion Graeme McDowell.

Westwood, Mickelson, Woods and PGA champion Martin Kaymer all have a shot at being No. 1 depending on their performances in Shanghai.
