Montgomerie 'sorry' for reported affair

NEWPORT, Wales (AP) — European Ryder Cup captain Colin Montgomerie says he's "sorry for the hurt I have caused" after a newspaper reported he had been unfaithful to his wife.

The Daily Mirror reported Friday that the 47-year-old golfer had cheated on his wife, Gaynor, with a former neighbor, Joanne Baldwin. The paper said he had ended the relationship and was trying to save his 2-year marriage.

Montgomerie issued a statement saying he had put his marriage "under considerable strain," but he and his wife were "working through these problems."

Montgomerie says he is "very sorry for the hurt I have caused to the ones I love so much."

Montgomerie and his first wife, Eimear Wilson, were divorced in 2004 after a 14-year marriage.
