PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (AP) — Tim Thelen shattered the Callaway Golf PGA Assistant Championship scoring record Sunday, shooting a 4-under 68 to finish at 23-under 265 - seven strokes ahead of second-place Sean Dougherty.
Thelen, the 48-year-old PGA assistant professional at The Falls Golf & Country Club in New Ulm, Texas, opened with rounds of 66, 65 and 66 on the PGA Golf Club's Wanamaker Course. He broke the tournament record of 270 set by Kyle Flinton in 2003.
``I really don't think I could have scored any better then I did,'' said Thelen, a two-time PGA Professional National Championship winner. ``I made four bogeys all week and on this golf course it's hard to do because there is trouble lurking everywhere.''
Dougherty, a PGA apprentice at Milburn Country Club in Overland Park, Kan., closed with a 68.
